Weight Units Overview

Metric: milligrams (mg), grams (g), kilograms (kg), metric tons (1,000 kg). US customary: ounces (oz), pounds (lb), short tons (2,000 lb). UK: stone (14 lb). Precious metals: troy ounce (31.1 g), troy pound (12 troy oz). For body weight, the US uses lbs, the UK uses stone and lbs, and most other countries use kg.

Troy Ounce vs. Avoirdupois Ounce

The everyday ounce is the avoirdupois ounce (28.35 g), used for food, postal, and general weight. The troy ounce (31.1035 g) is used only for precious metals — gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. If you buy a 1 oz gold coin, that is 1 troy oz = 31.1 g, not 28.35 g. Precious metal prices are always quoted per troy ounce.

Practical Uses for Weight Conversion

Cooking: recipes from different countries use different weight systems — convert grams to ounces for US recipes or vice versa. Fitness: most gym equipment in the US uses lbs; most international equipment uses kg. International shipping: package weight limits are often in kg for international carriers. Precious metals: gold and silver are priced per troy ounce globally.
