Typical recommended depth: 2โ€“4 inches. Deeper layers may compact and prevent water penetration. For bulk delivery, mulch is sold by the cubic yard (1 ydยณ โ‰ˆ 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft).

Mulch Types and Their Uses

Shredded hardwood (bark) mulch: the most popular choice for garden beds; breaks down slowly and improves soil. Wood chips: durable, good for paths; larger pieces don't compact. Pine straw: great for acid-loving plants like blueberries and azaleas. Rubber mulch: long-lasting but doesn't improve soil. Straw mulch: used around vegetables; decomposes quickly. Avoid fresh wood chips from diseased trees โ€” they can spread problems.

Benefits of Mulching

Mulch provides: moisture retention (reduces watering by 25โ€“50%), weed suppression (blocks light to weed seeds, reduces germination 90%+ at 3-inch depth), soil temperature moderation, and organic matter addition as it decomposes. Ring trees in a 3-foot mulch circle (not piled against the trunk) to improve tree health and protect against mower damage.

Bags vs. Bulk Delivery

Bagged mulch (1โ€“3 cu ft) is convenient for small projects. Bulk mulch by the cubic yard is significantly cheaper for medium to large jobs. A cubic yard of bulk mulch costs $25โ€“$60 delivered; the equivalent in 2 cu ft bags at $4โ€“$7 each would cost $55โ€“$95. For projects over 3โ€“4 cubic yards, bulk delivery is usually more economical.

Frequently Asked Questions

At 3 inches deep: 1 sq ft ร— (3/12) ft = 0.25 cubic feet. For 100 sq ft, that's 25 cubic feet = 0.93 cubic yards. Formula: (area in sq ft ร— depth in inches) รท 324 = cubic yards.
At 3-inch depth: 108 sq ft per cubic yard. At 2 inches: 162 sq ft. At 4 inches: 81 sq ft.
2โ€“4 inches is the standard recommended depth. 3 inches is the most common recommendation for weed suppression and moisture retention. Avoid more than 4 inches โ€” excessive mulch reduces oxygen and water penetration and may cause crown rot.
1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet รท 2 = 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft mulch (round up to 14). For 3 cu ft bags: 9 bags per cubic yard.
