Salary vs. Hourly Pay

A salary is a fixed annual compensation regardless of hours worked. An hourly wage is paid per hour and varies with actual hours. To compare offers: convert salary to hourly using the hours you expect to work, or convert hourly to annual using a full-time schedule.

Standard Work Hours Reference

Full-time (US): 40 hours/week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours/year. Common conversions: $15/hr → $31,200/yr. $20/hr → $41,600/yr. $25/hr → $52,000/yr. $30/hr → $62,400/yr. $40/hr → $83,200/yr. $50/hr → $104,000/yr.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hourly rate = Annual salary ÷ (Hours per week × Work weeks per year). The standard assumption is 40 hours/week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours/year. Example: $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00/hour.
A standard full-time schedule is 2,080 hours per year (40 hours/week × 52 weeks). If you take 2 weeks of paid vacation, your paid hours are still 2,080 (vacation is paid). Your actual worked hours would be 2,080 − 80 = 2,000.
Bi-weekly pay means you receive a paycheck every two weeks — 26 paychecks per year. Bi-weekly pay per check = Annual salary ÷ 26. This is different from semi-monthly (twice a month, 24 paychecks/year).
If you are salaried and receive paid vacation, your annual salary covers both working hours and vacation hours, so your effective hourly rate does not change. If you want your 'effective work-hours rate' (only counting hours actually worked), subtract vacation hours from 2,080 before dividing.
Monthly equivalent = Hourly rate × Hours per week × (52 ÷ 12) = Hourly rate × 4.333. Example: $25/hour × 40 hours × 4.333 = $4,333/month. Note: months vary in length, so this is an average.
